5 June – to Gloucester Va

Stayed at the Chesapeake Bay RV Park, a really big park.  They had 5” of rain the day before so some of it was a little soggy.  Went for a walk after dinner and found a couple of good ole boys, strumming and singing  some old rock and roll songs.  They invited us over to join them and so we made some new BFF’s.  Lovely people, a group of family and friends who camp together regularly.  The two blokes were part of a church band called ‘Work In Progress’, one especially had good vocals.  We picked their brains about lots of stuff while we were chatting.

6 June –  Virginia Beach

Sun is shining again – yay!

Slow start to the day, broke camp, grocery shopped at Walmart, found an after-hours drive-in bank to do our necessary transactions (of course we can’t drive in, but we stood in the queue, between the cars!!).  We even did some sightseeing stuff today – The Mariners Museum, set in a 550 acre park.  There wasn’t really any RV parking but we made some!  This museum was on Kim’s list of wanna-do’s – especially seeing about the ironclad ships which fought in the civil war right in this area.  Even I found it fascinating.  It was huge and very well done but unfortunately time didn’t allow us to see it all.

Our route onwards took us through a very long under water tunnel on the way to Virginia Beach, and we had to pull over for inspection as we carry flammable gas.  No worries, just had to turn the LPG off, so we ran the generator to keep the fridge operating meantime.  Arrived at the Holiday Trav-L-Park which is awesome for kids, bouncy castles, four pools, waterslides, games rooms, mini golf etc.  But… there are some bikers camped not far from us and it is only 7.30pm and they are already doing burnouts and making a ruckus!  Bikies : )

Menu malfunction tonight.  Bought what looked to be a nice hunk of rump to roast, but starting to prepare I read the instructions and it is a pot roast cut.  Hmm!  Oh well, cut it in half so it would fit in our one and only saucepan and throw some carrots etc in and call it a pot roast.  And it was absolutely delicious,  falling apart tender, even if we did eat at 9pm!  Looking forward to the other half which is in the freezer.

7 June - Another beautiful day in Paradise at Virginia Beach

So staying another night here.  We are off on the trolley to Virginia Beach this morning. Best $6 ever spent.  It was really too far to cycle and the shuttle took us right to one end of the beach strip where we caught another shuttle and did the loop right up the other end - about 40 blocks.  For $4 ($2 for Kim) you have unlimited hop on hop off travel until 2am. The beach was humming! Sunday here and a big chunk of the beach was laid out for sand sport - sand soccer, sand hockey, flag football – couldn’t quite work out what they were trying to achieve with that one. We later found out they were holding the 2015 championships this weekend and expecting 90,000 people (make that 90,002 as they didn’t know we were coming)!

The Atlantic ocean looks rough today, big breakers rolling onto the beach.  The Lifeguard stand was waving the red flag, signifying the beach is ‘dangerous for swimming’ but there were still people in there getting smashed by the waves.  There is a boardwalk right next to the beach, then beside it a separate paved area for pushbikes and golf carts. The road adjacent was full of beachwear shops, hotels and restaurants. There is an old rickety fishing pier, apparently you can catch kingfish from there, bicycles for Africa and lots of people wandering around in not much at all.

It was hot so we came back to the camp for a swim before heading back to the beach for dinner.  And a nice dinner it was too, not a hamburger in sight, nor fries!!  My twin lobster tails was a delight and Kim enjoyed his steak.  With a Pina Colada to start, which was a meal in itself, it was a nice night!
