26 May Fort McAllister State Park

Woke to gentle rain drops filtering through the trees.  We have been so lucky with the weather, just 

the odd shower while driving but they generally only last minutes, not days like at home.  Luckily we have missed all the flooding and hurricanes, seems like the bad weather follows our footsteps.  Better keep moving!  Turned sunny half an hour later and we are off on the bikes to the main office to get some WIFI so we can plan our next few days.  We will also check out the historic site here, the most active Confederate earthwork fortification in Savannahs defences.  General Robert E Lee apparently suggested strengthening the battery and the earthen walls withstood the new heavier artillery they had back in 1861 – 15 inch cannons.  Fort McAllister also marks the end of Sherman’s march to the sea.  Around 1930 Henry Ford purchased the site to restore it and the earthworks and bomb proofs have since been restored to their 1864 appearance.  There you go, history lesson done and dusted!  It’s just interesting that we have heard these famous names over and over and now we are standing on the very ground where that history was born.

PS We had deer wandering through our campsite during the night!
