August 15-17 Weekend

Woke to another clear blue sky.  On the road early today, want to cover some miles.  We have zigged west and now we are zagging east to line us up with Kentucky.  So we left Iowa, driving east through Illinois.  Checked out the Yogi Bear Campground but decided to move on, the sites there were very close together, the pool was tiny and full of people.  So we drove another 20 odd miles to Clinton Lake State Recreation Area, near Dewitt.  This is more like it, large spread out sites, surrounded by shady trees. 

The lake is man made, it was constructed in 1970.  The park land is owned by AmerGen/Exelon who operate a nuclear power plant in the area.  I guess they needed a lake.

It is a bit of a hike on the bikes from our site along the road to the lake but it does have a white sandy beach.  There is a $2/day charge to use the beach, but it’s a nice area with BBQs, picnic tables etc. and also a café.

Lovely clear night, the stars were very bright.  No motorway noise here but the night animals, frogs insects, maybe bats, I don’t know, but their music was as loud as traffic.

Woke early Sunday morning to see a white tail deer having breakfast right next to the RV.  Then a large squirrel with a very bushy tail climbed the tree next door and there are bunnies galore too!  Very cool!

Come Monday the whole park empties out and we are the only ones in our loop. So we get to explore a little more and find there are tracks from each of the loops down to the lake and we have our own private little beach.  We decide to stay here one more day and enjoy our new found backyard.  The lake is very warm, surprising that fish survive in it   Hope we don’t glow in the dark tonight!
